Epic coins are used to purchase weapons, armor, and accessories from the shop. They can also be used to purchase special items and the spells Ghost Knight and Hydra. In the Daily Dungeon, they can be spent every 5 levels to restore health and/or mana.

Epic coins are earned in Hero mode. Monsters drop no coins, while bosses drop 5 x their zone number. The reward for finishing each zone is more complicated:

25 + (5 * Loop #) + [0, 5, 10] + (0-20)

For example, finishing the first zone or second zone on your first loop will award 25 + (5 * 0) + 0 + a random amount from 0 to 20, or between 25 and 45. Finishing the third or fourth zone on a gold skull loop (3) will award 25 + (5 * 3) + 5 + a random amount from 0 to 20, or between 45 and 65. Finishing the fifth or sixth zone on a purple 1 loop (5) will award 25 + (5 * 5) + 10 + a random amount from 0 to 20, or between 60 and 80.

(This formula isn't perfect but will be very close. The real number can be slightly less, or in the case of the final zone, even higher than 25 sometimes.)

The loop number can be seen by the color of the skull in the top left corner. Empty is 0, bronze is 1, silver is 2, gold is 3, purple is 4, and then a number appears over top of the purple skull. A number 1 is loop 5, and so on.

The Philosopher's Stone key item can be purchased for real money, to double all epic coins earned while playing Hero mode.
